first I've heard of it but no I want to
You'll have to take us there BB - I feel a hot sloppy food followed by cake meet-up coming on! :D
That's pretty much how excited I was when I came across it!!!
Don't apologise for cake excitement, it's the best kind of excitment.
I was googling vegan cake places in london and it came up through a link from another cake shop. Next week I am hunting this place down, and reporting back!!
Have you been there yet Troutina?
By the way, in case anyone was planning to check out the branch of RaW which opened by Liverpool Street in April, it now appears to have closed down. It closed when the whole area had a two day power cut about a month ago and I haven't seen it open since (I walk past morning and afternoon). There's no notice in the window and all the equipment/ furniture/ signs are still there (even 2 bottles of agave syrup sitting in the window annoying me - I could have had them!)
It wasn't ever very busy but I would have thought they'd give it a longer try than that...
It was alright, nothing special, little more than getting a Fresh sandwich though really
Yeah, the Raw at Victoria has shut down as well.
seems like there´s no stall of them at selfridges either anymore. when i was there with my mother there was only a healthy juice bar left
Has anyone been to Chutneys in Drummond St lately, and what did you think, please? (I have had a search of the forum and can't find any reports but that might be me :o )
I might need to meet someone up there and I wasn't too impressed with my last visit to Ravi Shankar (they served a vegan with something non-vegan despite having been asked whether it was vegan). I have also been reading discouraging things about Diwana which is a shame as both of those used to be reliable. But the reports of Chutneys on HappyCow look promising.
I've been to several restaurants on Drummond Street and I think Chutney's was my favourite. But I found that will all the restaurant on Drummond Street I needed to be continually check that things were vegan, otherwise they'd forget and bring my vegan meal with a non-vegan chutney.
Thanks Robb - might give Chutney's a whirl then.
Yes, you do have to watch out for the side bits and pieces, probably because of miscommunications in the kitchen, but it helps when the waiters at least show signs of knowing what "vegan" means! I have found the various branches of Sagar to be quite good in that respect.
Thanks for mentioning Greens and Beans, Alison - I have been past and wondered what it was like. I would certainly like to try it although I think my friend may be set on an Indian meal so possibly not this time.
This http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/restaur...urant-1262.php says that Chutney's does offer a takeaway service, but it might be an idea to ring them first and check if you're going to be in a rush.
Euston to Victoria is pretty fast on the Victoria Line but it often seems not to be running so that's another thing to check (on the Tfl website).
Yeah, best leave plenty of space for when you're in Brighton ;)
I went there with my omnivorous friend the other night and I thought it was very good indeed so thanks for the encouragement to try it.
The waiters were very welcoming (unlike some other restaurants not a million miles from there) and were clued up about what was vegan. I had the none-too-adventurous combination of bhel poori and masala dhosa - they did me extra sambar with the dhosa instead of the non-vegan chutney. The food was above average (not too salt for once I thought). Fresh coconut milk/water was on offer as a drink (served in the coconut). Service was prompt but we weren't rushed.
My friend hadn't been to a S. Indian place before and liked it very much too.
I think it came to around £30 for the two of us including two starters, two main courses, one pudding, one tea and a couple of drinks.
I'd definitely go there again.
Not sure how old this information is but hoping it's still valid - vegan afternoon tea:

Wow!! :D :D
I think we should go! (But maybe we can ask for a vegan high fat version!)

Good idea. *puts on her tea party dress*
Oh definately the high fat version!
Have since found a recent (June 09) review on another forum which isn't encouraging:
[Quote] Well, it was a bit pants tbh. We were booked in for tea in "the drawing room" at 2pm. We actually ended up packed into a corner of the fairly unattractive subterranean restaurant with the four or five other pairs who had also booked afternoon tea. At 2.45 we finally got pots of tea but still no food. I think we finally got the food at 3pm by which time we were just about chewing our arm off. We asked if the milk in the jug was soya milk - the waitress looked suprised and said that, no, it was normal milk. We asked for soya (we'd booked a vegan tea ffs) and that took about another ten minutes to arrive. The food, when it finally arrived, wasn't great. Actually the sandwiches were quite nice but there were nowhere near enough of them bearing in mind we were starving at this point. The stale scones came with foil-wrapped pats of butter http://www.urban75.net/ubb/rolleyes.gif and, next to us, vegans were being given cheesecake by hotel staff who didn't understand why that wasn't going to work. The cakes weren't that great either.
It's a shame because I really wanted it to be good http://www.urban75.net/ubb/frown.gif [End Quote]
However, I still think if a few of us are game if might be worth a shot - I guess the more interest they get the more they'll learn and the more inclined they'll be to correct their mistakes... And around 17 pounds is actually comparatively cheap...
Sounds shocking!
Well if it is crap I don't think we'll be sitting there meekly for an hour waiting - or paying! And if we book the drawing room we had better be in the drawing room or we won't stay! We can always go somewhere else to get cake if they let us down!
I'd still be interested in giving it a go but I think I ought to pop in beforehand and see if they can convince me that they can do better! ;)
Wasn't there an afternoon tea thread? Ah yes, here it is. I'll post some info over there and see who is interested in doing this.
Hmm, that description doesn't make it sound too appealing...but I'd be up for trying it if you guys go when I'm in London (especially as I've never had a proper tea in London).
I went to bake-a-boo on Saturday afternoon and it's a really cute place (very girly and Cath Kidstony). I contacted them the day before to see if they did vegan afternoon tea (sadly they don't) and was told that on Saturday they would only have one type of vegan cake (chocolate cupcakes) so I should reserve some if I wanted them. It was a good thing I did as when we got there at 3, our reserved ones were the only vegan ones left. They seem to have a large range of dairy free cakes but a limitied range of egg free. There's a decent selection of loose leaf tea which comes in vintage pots large enough for about 5 cups. The cupcakes were large and had a really good frosting (also pretty moist). Two pots of tea and two cupcakes came to 6.50 which I thought was pretty good.
It's a small place with maybe 6 tables seating 2 and a large table for about 12 at the back where they have private parties (there's also a couple of tables outside but it's not a particularly nice road to sit on). It was quite busy when we got there but we got a table and didn't have to wait too long. It's about a 10 minute walk from West Hampstead stations (tube and 2 main lines).
I've emailed to see if they could be persauded to do a vegan tea for a large enough group - the area at the back is really lovely for a gathering.
New South Indian vegetarian restaurant in Covent Garden.
Sagar has opened a fourth branch at 31 Catherine Street, Covent Garden, London WC2B 5JS (just off Aldwych). Tel: 020-7836 6377.
Open: Mon-Sun 12.00-23.00. Just like the branches in Hammersmith, Tottenham Court Road and Twickenham.
Great value south Indian food such as dosas and uthappam from £4.25, curries £3.25-4.75. Thali from £12.25. Lunch box £3.50 with bhajia, 2 curries, salad, rice and Indian bread.
Eat in lunch special £5.75 with pappdam, bhajia, upma, masala dosa, rice of the day, veg curry, chutney and dessert.
That Catherine St Sagar is the one some of the forum-ites went to the opening of a couple of months ago. I couldn't go to that but I've been there three or four times since and it is indeed just as nice as the other branches. Some of the waiters are also familiar from other branches, they must have promoted them :D They have the usual system that if you tell them you're vegan they will bring you a special vegan version of the menu.
Just one thing: if anyone is thinking of going late in the evening I would phone and check opening times - I have a feeling they are open until 11 on Fridays and Saturdays but may close earlier on other days.
A few years ago I ate at The Mango Tree, where I had some of the best Thai food I've ever had. At the time they didn't have even a vegetarian menu, but they cooked vegan stuff specially.
I've just looked at their website again and they seem to now have a vegan menu:
http://www.mangotree.org.uk/menus_detail.php?id=25
It's not cheap - I wasn't paying. I think it came to about £96 a head inc drinks, but we were completely sozzled.
They don't have prices against the vegan items, but they seem to have lunches from £20 and dinner from £30 a head.
Put me down as a possible for the teaparty, please, VeganMonkey! I'll come if I can.
I finally went to Tibits last night and was quite impressed. Lots for vegans and as Marrers (I think it was) said, quite similar to the late lamented Country Life, only with a posher, but still relaxed, atmosphere (and no religious pamphlets :D) .
It was a (the?) warm evening and we were able to sit outside in the (pedestrianised) street. I think it came to about £18/head+service even though we rather pigged out I'm afraid. The omnivore friends I was with were pretty impressed too.
Am going to go back a.s.a.p. - I really hope this one stays in business!
I got a menu via email from The Mango Tree that includes prices. For the quality they seem quite reasonable:

*cough* :D
Hello all
I originally posted this on a different thread, however Marrers kindly suggested I try here instead as it's a more popular thread.
I'll be stopping near Euston Station in a few weeks time, or on my hols, and wanted to grab something nice to eat in the area. I will have some luggage with me so won't want to track too far. I was looking for recommendations?
Many thanks
Moo
Hi Moo,
The nearest places would undoubtedly be one of the Indian vegetarian restaurants on Drummond Street, just to the west of Euston station. There are a few of them - my favourite is probably Chutney's.
Or if you're up for going a little bit further, there's a branch of Sagar (Indian again) on Percy Street which is (almost?) next door to a vegan Chinese buffet (I think this one is the best of the Chinese buffets - apart from Mr Man in Edgware).
Hope that helps...
Hello Moo :D I liked Chutney's when I went there the other week, and alisont speaks highly of a non-Indian veggie that's also in Drummond St - Greens and Beans. That discussion is a bit further up this thread I think.
I've been going to Mr Man since it was called Chai 5 years ago, as it was the only vegan restaurant quite local for me..
The food is good but what do you expect for £5.00 all you can eat buffet,- its a all a bit overcooked and oily for me , but still quite healthy (and good value for money).
Saying that they do a la carte in the evening and thats much better :)
I reccomend it..and the staff and owners are really friendly and its all vegan!!! :D
I went to Ravi Shanker the other day and I thought the food and service was good compared to Chutneys where I've been to a few times and the food wasn't so good and the service was very slow,:rollseyes_ani:
Has anybody been to the Routemaster?...I'm looking forward to going there this weekend after the demo,
Hello all
Many thanks for your replies. So much choice there :) Chinese, Indian and Italian. I think I like the sound of Chutneys or Ravi Shanker. Marrers also suggested Planet Organic, but I think I will save this one for another day, as Chutneys seems a little closer looking at google maps. Although I was looking forward to grabbing a bottle of vegan wine from there to take with me on the train.
Greens and Beans also sounds like a nice place. A friend recently gave me a voucher for a free smoothie there - I might save that for my journey back - We will be on the sleeper train from Scotland, so Greens and Beans sounds like a good place to stop for breakfast.
Thanks everyone for your advice :). It seems I need to be taking more trips in to London to try out some of these places.
